Introduction to food safety in a catering environment for low-risk or front-of-house staff

Duration: 50 minutes*

The Level 1 in Food Safety for Catering video e-Learning course is an interactive and fully-certified training scheme for anyone who works in the catering industry, or is responsible for food handling in a catering setting. This introductory course is fully certified and approved by RoSPA and the CPD, and is widely accepted as basic proof of competence in the catering industry.

Food handlers and their employers have a legal obligation to ensure that food is handled and prepared in a safe manner. These requirements are laid out across several UK and EU laws, which state that food handlers must make sure that any food which is prepared, cooked, served or sold is safe for human consumption.

Food handlers have a heightened responsibility when it comes to food preparation, both in a legal and moral sense. Poor food preparation not only poses a risk of infection for healthy people, but could also cause an allergic reaction, or endanger the life of an individual with a weakened immune system.

The Level 1 in Food Safety for Catering is an entry-level food safety course, providing candidates with a basic awareness of the dangers that poor food safety standards pose. Candidates will learn about the most common risk factors in food preparation for catering, including temperature controls and cross-contamination, and how to mitigate these issues through best practices.

The Level 1 in Food Safety for Catering course is generally considered to be the minimum requirement for anyone working in catering in any capacity. This may include individuals who are not directly involved in food preparation, including waiters, porters and individuals handling low-risk food.

SAMS also offer a range of more advanced food safety courses, including the Level 2 and Level 3 Awards in Food Safety for Catering, as well as a range of courses for other food sectors.

The Level 1 in Food Safety for Catering Award provides an ideal solution to staff induction training, and is perfect for:

  • New employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge;
  • Employees handling low-risk or wrapped foods (category A);
  • Front of house employees, such as waiting or check out staff;
  • Back of house employees, such as kitchen porters or warehouse staff.
